What's this? Today is the feast day of Holy John Cassian the Roman? "Fish, wine and oil" declares my gaudy liturgical calendar in tiny red letters. I shall interpret for the non-religious reader. "Fish, wine and oil"="Bourbon". Quick vivification! I enjoy both E. Williams and Makers M. and even share some with the lady.
John Cassian, by the way, wrote institutes and conferences. Guidebooks for monastics, really. I skim through these and lo, his warning leaps off the page like thunder:
"BEWARE therefore lest at any time you take again any of those things which you renounced and forsook."
I struggle as to whether I ought to believe St. John or the calendar on my wall.
